- Proactive Schools Begin Early Preparation for 2026 BECE Registration Requirements.
As Ghana prepares for the official opening of the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) registration portal, many schools have already begun mobilizing parents to submit the necessary details ahead of time. This early preparation is aimed at ensuring a smooth and error-free registration process once WAEC launches the multi-phase registration system.
In anticipation of the first phase of the three- to four-stage registration process, schools are urging parents to provide key candidate information early. Understanding these requirements is essential, as delays or inaccuracies can cause complications that may affect a student’s registration status.
Information Schools Are Requesting from Parents
1. Correct and Complete Student Names
Schools are asking parents to submit the full legal names of their children. These should be written clearly on the forms provided and must include the first name, middle name(s), and surname. WAEC’s registration platform accepts a maximum of 40 characters, so excessively long names risk being rejected.
Parents are cautioned to ensure that the names match exactly as they appear on the student’s birth certificate. Adding additional names not found on the birth certificate may cause future difficulties for the student and may require costly name correction procedures. Ensuring accurate spelling and correct arrangement of names is equally important.
2. Candidate’s Date of Birth
Parents are required to provide the correct date of birth of their ward, along with the age the student will be in 2026. This is a compulsory requirement for BECE registration. Verifying the date of birth from official documents is strongly recommended, as errors can be costly and time-consuming to amend in the future.
3. Passport Photograph for Registration
Schools are also requesting payment for fresh passport-size photographs, which they will capture and edit to meet WAEC’s specifications. Despite the digital nature of the photographs, some schools have reportedly quoted high fees—ranging from GHS 50 to GHS 100—simply for taking images that will not be physically printed.
With modern mobile devices capable of producing high-quality digital passport photos, and with simple computer software available for editing, concerns have been raised that some schools may be charging excessively for a basic service.

A Call for Accuracy and Transparency
As preparations continue, parents are encouraged to provide accurate information and seek clarification where needed. Schools, on the other hand, are expected to maintain transparency and avoid imposing unreasonable charges.
Early compliance from both schools and parents will ensure a seamless 2026 BECE registration process and prevent avoidable challenges during WAEC’s official registration phases.
