University of Ghana Opens Kumasi City Campus

The University of Ghana has opened Kumasi City Campus as part of its agenda towards enhancing access to quality education in Ghana.

This move aims to cater to students who were previously unable to secure admission to the main campus, thereby democratizing educational opportunities.

The event, which marked the maiden matriculation ceremony for 26 undergraduate students for the 2023-2024 academic year, was met with enthusiasm and hope for the future of education in the region. The campus, established as one of two satellite campuses of the College of Education, is fully accredited to offer undergraduate programs, notably the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, highlighted the institution’s commitment to extending its premium services beyond its traditional boundaries. She emphasized the importance of these city campuses in ensuring manageable student numbers, thereby facilitating quality teaching, learning, and effective mentoring to prepare students for both local and global challenges.

Prof. Amfo acknowledged the constraints faced by the main campus, which led to the rejection of numerous qualified applicants due to inadequate facilities and resources. In light of this, she encouraged prospective students and guardians to consider the programs offered at the city campuses, thereby increasing their chances of admission to this prestigious institution.

Furthermore, the Vice-Chancellor underscored the university’s commitment to gender inclusivity, noting that 56.6% of the admitted students for the academic year were female, in line with the institution’s affirmative action policy.

Looking ahead, Prof. Amfo pledged to develop the Kumasi City Campus into a world-class educational hub, complete with all necessary facilities and services to uphold the university’s vision and mission. She commended the implementation team for their dedication and urged them to ensure that the campuses evolve into semi-autonomous entities.

Addressing the newly admitted students, the Acting Principal of the Kumasi City Campus, Prof. Edward Nketiah-Amponsah, emphasized the importance of building a strong network to provide mentorship and future job opportunities. Despite the excitement surrounding the inauguration, challenges remain, as highlighted by a representative of the matriculation class, Tracy Afi Agossa. Accommodation emerged as a primary concern, with many students facing financial constraints due to the need to commute from home to campus. Agossa appealed to management to address this issue by considering the construction of a hostel facility.
