Literacy Fair Held By Ga East Municipal Education Directorate
The Ga East Municipal Education Directorate recently hosted a lively Literacy Fair at the Pentecostal International Worship Centre (PIWC) in Atomic, aimed at fostering a love for reading among young pupils from Basic 1 to 3. The event, a vibrant celebration of literacy, brought together educators, students, and community leaders to emphasize the importance of reading.

Mr. Eric Sey, the Municipal Director of Education for Ga East, warmly welcomed attendees, highlighting the significance of early reading habits in children’s educational development. “Reading is the foundation of all learning,” Sey remarked. “This event is a crucial step towards creating a culture of reading within our communities.”
The guest of honor, Mr. Prince Charles Agyemang Duah, Director for Schools and Instructions at the Ghana Education Service Headquarters, delivered an inspiring speech. He praised the initiative, emphasizing the role of literacy in shaping the future of young Ghanaians. “When we empower our children with the ability to read, we open doors to endless opportunities,” Duah stated.
Key figures in attendance included Hon. Deborah Ampofo, the Municipal Chief Executive for Ga East Municipal Assembly, and Hon. Michael Oquaye Jr., the Parliamentary candidate for Dome Kwabenya Constituency on the ticket of NPP. Both participated in model reading sessions, showcasing their commitment to education and literacy. “Reading aloud to children not only improves their reading skills but also instills a lifelong love for books,” said Hon. Ampofo during her reading session.
The fair featured a variety of engaging activities designed to inspire and entertain the young pupils. News casting segments allowed students to demonstrate their understanding of current events and enhance their public speaking abilities. Sketch dramas brought stories to life on stage, encouraging creativity and performance skills among the participants.
A special reading segment saw selected pupils sharing excerpts from their favorite books, showcasing their reading prowess and enthusiasm for literature. The model reading sessions, led by skilled readers including Hon. Oquaye Jr., set benchmarks for fluency, intonation, and comprehension, providing pupils with exemplary reading practices to emulate.
Interactive dialogue sessions fostered critical thinking and communication skills, as pupils discussed and debated topics from their readings. These segments aimed to empower students by developing essential skills that will benefit them throughout their lives.
Hon. Bright Paul Mintah, the Presiding Member for Ga East Municipal Assembly, and Mrs. Harriet Lomotey, District Education Director for Shai Osudoku, were also present, reflecting the widespread support for the initiative. Other stakeholders, including headquarters representatives, teachers, and SMC/PA executives, contributed to the fair’s success, demonstrating a collective commitment to enhancing literacy among young learners.
