New and Smart Tips For Answering WASSCE/BECE English Comprehension Questions
The comprehension passage and questions are an important section of the English Language paper at BECE and WASSCE. For example, the BECE carries at least 20 marks out of the 60 in Section B, and students must do well to score at least 18/20 to improve their chances of performing. The WASSCE carries at least 30 marks, and students who do well in comprehension can do well in the English language paper.
WAEC will surely not be excited that you know these tips because they will make you smarter, and help you provide excellent answers on time.
In this post, we are sharing with students new and smart tips for answering WASSCE and BECE English comprehension questions.
To answer the questions quickly, intelligently, and with a higher score, abandon the traditional method and utilise this method instead.
Step 1:
Read the questions: Reading the questions before the passage is an excellent approach. By reading the questions before the passage, you know exactly what you should be looking out for in the passage proper. It saves time compared to repeatedly reading the passage, answering the questions, and then returning to the passage.
Step 2:
Unpack the questions by reading them through a second time. This helps you be sure of what you should look out for as you read. This time, underline the key issues in the question and keep them in mind as you read the passage.
Step 3:
Read the passage thoroughly. As you read the text or passage, use your pencil to underline and mark sentences that appear to be the ones for which you need to answer the questions. As you go along, you can also write the question numbers that correspond with them in each of the sentences.
Step 4:
This time, read the passage quickly and confirm or complete the answers to the questions. Do not forget to write the respective question numbers next to the supposed answers. This reading will also confirm the answers you numbered during the first reading.
Step 5:
Now answer the questions by constructing new sentences based on the sentences you identified and numbered. Don’t just use sentences from the passage as answers. If you do this, you’ll likely receive a lower score or even receive a zero for your lifted answers. Remember that it is a comprehension exercise, and the examiner is interested in whether you understand the passage or not. He or she does not want you to copy and paste the passage word for word as an answer.
Here are some additional tips for answering WASSCE/BECE English comprehension questions.
Write clear and easy-to-understand sentences. Use your best handwriting and avoid spelling mistakes.
Do not rush to answer questions during the examination. Make sure you understand the question. If you are confused or not convinced, read the questions all over again.
Do not provide answers outside the passage because you are familiar with the topic. Let your answers stay within the passage.
Avoid focusing your attention on new or large words in a passage that you do not understand.
If the passage has underlined words for which you must provide synonyms, do not think outside the passage. What I mean is that each word or phrase you want to provide must be able to replace the word underlined, as well as help you maintain the meaning of the passage. To do this, each time you have a new word or phrase in mind, put that phrase into the sentences and read the entire paragraph with it to see if it still makes sense. If you do not do this, you are thinking of synonyms outside the passage, and you will often be wrong.
