The Ghana Ministry of Education is one of the key government institutions in the country. Currently, there are 19 agencies under the ministry of education. Let’s take a look at these agencies.

1. Ghana Education Service (GES)

The duty of GES is the implementation of government policies and strategies concerning non-tertiary education in Ghana. This involves the management of public basic and secondary schools including the recruitment, deployment and management of teachers.

2. Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC)

This body is to monitor Tertiary Education in Ghana, regulation and coordination of Tertiary Education in Ghana in order that the institutions possess the minimum requirement in terms of academic programs and facilities.

3. National Schools Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA)

They are mainly responsible for quality assurance of both public and private schools through inspection visits and evaluation exercises.

4. National Teaching Council (NTC)

NTC manages issuance of certificates to teachers and professional development of the same for the teachers in Ghana. The Council also ensures the practices of the professional teachers who have in active practice in different fields and seeks out for professional development activities periodically.

5. National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA)

Development and updating of curricula for pre-tertiary education is under the jurisdiction of the said authority. It looks into the relevance of the curriculum vis-à-vis the social requirements.

6. Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET)

CTVET focuses on the development and regulation of technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in Ghana, promoting skills development for the workforce.

7. Ghana Library Authority (GhLA)

GhLA manages public libraries across the country and promotes literacy through the provision of reading materials and library services.

8. National Archives

The National Archives is responsible for the preservation and management of government records and archives, ensuring that important documents are kept for historical and research purposes.

9. Centre for Distance Learning and Open Schools (CENDLOS):

CENDLOS supports distance education and open schooling, providing alternative learning opportunities for students who cannot attend traditional schools.

10. Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS):

GAAS promotes the advancement of knowledge in the arts and sciences. It brings together leading scholars and scientists to discuss and address national and international issues.

11. Complementary Education Agency (CEA):

CEA focuses on non-formal education, aiming to provide literacy and numeracy skills to out-of-school children, youth, and adults.

12. National Service Secretariat (NSS):

NSS manages the national service program, which requires graduates of tertiary institutions to serve in various sectors across the country for a year.

13. Student Loan Trust Fund (SLTF):

SLTF provides financial assistance to students in tertiary institutions through loans to support their education.

14. Ghana Commission for UNESCO:

This commission liaises with UNESCO on education, science, culture, and communication, ensuring that Ghana benefits from UNESCO programs and initiatives.

15. West African Examination Council (WAEC):

WAEC is responsible for conducting examinations in Ghana and other West African countries, including the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

16. Ghana Book Development Council (GBDC):

GBDC promotes the development of the book industry in Ghana, encouraging the production and distribution of locally authored books.

17. Ghana Education Trust Fund (GET-Fund):

GET-Fund provides financial resources for the development of educational infrastructure, scholarships, and other educational initiatives.

18. Ghana TVET Service:

This service manages the delivery of TVET programs across the country, ensuring that students acquire the practical skills needed for the job market.

19. Scholarship Secretariat:

The Scholarship Secretariat administers scholarships to deserving students to pursue higher education in Ghana and abroad. It happens to be on of the most demanding agencies in Ghana.
