Why GES Recruitment Has Delayed?
Recruitment of graduates from various teacher training institutions has delayed. Why is it so? The Ghana Education Service’s delay in recruiting graduate teachers leaves many awaiting employment since the last portal opening in 2020.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has been experiencing delays in recruiting graduate teachers, leaving many recent graduates in limbo as they await employment opportunities. The last time the recruitment portal was opened was in 2020, and since then, there has been no opportunity for degree graduates to apply for teaching positions within the education sector. This prolonged delay has raised concerns among graduates and stakeholders alike, prompting questions about the reasons behind the postponement and its impact on the education system and the economy as a whole.
One of the primary reasons cited for the delay in recruiting graduate teachers is the need for thorough planning and assessment of staffing needs within the education sector. Also, GES will need financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance before recruitment could be done.
GES is tasked with ensuring that schools across Ghana have a sufficient number of qualified educators to deliver quality education to students. Therefore, before opening the recruitment portal, GES must conduct a comprehensive analysis of staffing requirements in various schools, taking into account factors such as student population, subject specialization, and geographical distribution.
Another factor contributing to the delay is the need to align recruitment efforts with budgetary constraints and financial approval processes. Recruiting and hiring a large number of graduate teachers requires substantial financial resources, and GES must obtain approval from the Minister of Finance to proceed with the recruitment process. This approval process can be time-consuming, further prolonging the delay in opening the recruitment portal for degree graduates.

Additionally, GES may be implementing strategic changes or reforms within the education sector, which could affect the recruitment process. These changes may include revisions to recruitment criteria, updates to curriculum requirements, or the implementation of new policies aimed at enhancing the quality of education provided in schools. Such reforms require careful planning and coordination, which can contribute to delays in recruitment activities.
The prolonged delay in recruiting graduate teachers has significant implications for recent graduates who are eagerly awaiting employment opportunities. Many graduates spend years acquiring the necessary qualifications and training to become educators, only to find themselves unemployed due to the lack of recruitment opportunities. This not only affects their financial stability but also dampens their morale and enthusiasm for pursuing careers in education.
Furthermore, the delay in recruiting graduate teachers can exacerbate existing staffing shortages in schools, leading to overcrowded classrooms, increased workload for existing teachers, and decreased quality of education. Students may suffer from a lack of individualized attention and support, hindering their academic performance and overall development.
The Ghana Education Service’s delay in recruiting graduate teachers is a matter of concern for recent graduates, stakeholders, and the education sector as a whole. While the reasons behind the postponement may be justified in terms of planning and resource allocation, it is crucial for GES to expedite the recruitment process to address staffing needs and provide employment opportunities for qualified graduates. Delaying recruitment not only affects the livelihoods of graduates but also undermines efforts to improve the quality of education and promote national development.
Currently, the Ghana Education Service (GES) is embarking on a significant recruitment drive in 2024, with plans to hire 24,000 graduate teachers from various tertiary institutions. This initiative is aimed at addressing the staffing needs within the education sector and ensuring that schools across Ghana have an adequate number of educators to provide quality education to students.
To streamline the recruitment process, GES is conducting it in phases. Initially, the portal is open for graduates holding diploma certificates, with the portal for graduates with degree certificates set to open at a later date. This delay is attributed to ongoing efforts within GES to optimize staffing levels in senior high schools.
GES has identified disparities in staffing levels across different schools, with some being overstaffed while others face shortages of teachers. To rectify this imbalance, GES is working to ensure that each school has the appropriate number of teachers to meet its educational objectives.
Before recruitment can begin, GES must conduct a thorough assessment of staffing needs in schools throughout Ghana. This involves determining the specific number of teachers required by each institution to adequately cater to the student population. Additionally, financial approval from the Minister of Finance is necessary to ensure that the recruitment process is properly funded and aligned with budgetary constraints.
Prospective applicants are advised to prepare all required certificates, including the Licence Examination Certificate, Degree Certificate, National Service Certificate, WASSCE Certificate, and BECE Certificate. These documents serve as prerequisites for consideration during the recruitment process.
