- What are the benefits of such an educational edifice in these regions?
John Mahama, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress, has stated that the six new regions will receive one new university under the new NDC government.
Mixed feelings and opinions across the political divide have greeted this election promise as Ghana moves closer to the December 7th presidential and parliamentary elections.
He added that the new regions created under the NPP’s administration will be the prime target for befitting tertiary institutions.
The idea originated during a town hall meeting in Jasikan in March of this year. “It has always been the policy of the NDC to establish a university in every region.” So under Prof. Mills, we built universities in regions that did not have any. We constructed universities in the Volta, Eastern, and Brong Ahafo regions. In the 2020 manifesto of the NDC, there was a promise to build universities in the newly created regions,” he said.
The 6 Regions Getting New Universities Under NDC/Mahama
In this post, we examine the six regions that are set to receive a university each, with the aim of incorporating them into the national university network. Such projects, apart from expanding and spreading education across the country, will also expand the local economies of the regions as well as create temporary and permanent jobs for those in the localities.
Ghana’s north-east region
The North East Region of Ghana is one of the 6 regions getting one of the new universities under NDC/Mahama if the NDC wins the 2024 elections. The region is approximately 9,072 km2. The region borders the Upper East Region to the north and Togo to the east. The Northern Region and Upper West Region are to the south and west of the region, respectively.
The region has six administrative districts, and some popular locations that may be considered for the university are Bunkpurugu-Nyankpanduri, Chereponi, East Mamprusi, Nalerigu, Mamprugu-Moagduri, West Mamprusi, and Walewale.
Ghana’s Savannah Region
The Savannah Region is one of the two regions formed from the Northern Region in 2019. The region is approximately 35,853 sq km and the largest in the country, covering about 15% of Ghana’s total area, with Damongo as the regional capital. Locally, the region shares boundaries with the Upper West, North East, and Northern Regions to the north; the Oti Region to the east; the Bono East Region to the south; and the Ahafo Region to the west.
Damongo stands tall when it comes to the possible location of such a befitting university for the region.
Bono East Region of Ghana
The Bono East Region is one of the six newly created regions in Ghana. The 2019 Regional Re-organization Policy Implementation carved it out of the then-Brong Ahafo Region. It consists of eleven (11) districts, with Techiman serving as its capital.
The Bono East Region borders the Savannah Region on the north, the Bono Region on the west, the Ashanti Region on the south, and the Volta Lake on the east. Projections from the 2010 population and housing census indicate a total 2020 population of 1,133,769 people, occupying 22,952 km2 of land in the middle of Ghana, with a population density of 48.75 per sq km.
Oti Region of Ghana
The Oti Region is one of Ghana’s six newly created regions for 2019. The region is divided into eight administrative districts, with Damascus serving as the regional capital. The districts are Biakoye, Jasikan, Kadjebi, Krachi East, Krachi Nchumuru, Krachi West, Nkwanta South, and Nkwanta North.
The region occupies a land area of about 18,741 km2. The Northern Region borders the Oti Region on the north, the Volta Region borders it on the south, the Volta Lake borders it on the west, and the Republic of Togo borders it on the east. The region stretches from the northern part of Kpando Municipality in the Volta Region to the northern part of Ghana.
Biakoye, Jasikan, Kadjebi, Krachi East, Krachi Nchumuru, Krachi West, Nkwanta South, and Nkwanta North are all potential competitive locations that could be considered for a university.
Ghana’s Ahafo Region
By Legislative Instrument in 2019, the Brong Ahafo Region became the Ahafo Region, and in May 2020, the Regional Health Directorate (RHD) officially started operations.
The Ahafo Region is located in the south-western part of Ghana. Ahafo Region has a total land area of 5,193 km2.
The Brong Region borders it on the north and west, the Ashanti Region borders it on the north and east, and the Western North borders it on the south.

The Western North Region of Ghana
The Western North Region will be the last of the 6 regions getting new universities under the NDC/Mahama if they win the elections in December.
A Constitutional Instrument (C.I.) 117 established the Western North Region on February 15, 2019. La Cote d’Ivoire borders the region to the west, the Central Region to the southeast, the Western Region to the south, and the Ashanti, Ahafo, and Bono regions to the north.
