12-Year-Old Bruhat Soma Wins US National Spelling Bee
A Ghana Education News Publication About Bruhat Soma – Bruhat Soma Wins US National Spelling Bee.
In a spell-off on Thursday, 12-year-old Tampa, Florida resident Bruhat Soma won the 96th Scripps National Spelling Bee. In just ninety seconds, he accurately spelt 29 words, some of which were the most difficult, esoteric and plain cryptic words in the English language.
The yearly tournament went to a spell-off, a rapid-elimination procedure introduced in 2021, for the second time only, with two finalists standing as time ran out. After accurately spelling “Hoofddorp,” a town close to Amsterdam, Bruhat made it to the spell-off.
This forced him to compete against 12-year-old Faizan Zaki of Allen, Texas, who correctly identified the term “nicuri,” which comes from a Brazilian palm, without posing any queries on its meaning or provenance.
Then, in a spell-off, Bruhat hurried through a list of words, getting 29 before the clock ran out. In the ninety seconds, Faizan spelt twenty words from the same list properly. This awarded Bruhat, a basketball enthusiast who had been featured shooting baskets in a pre-recorded section of the live event, the coveted trophy and a $50,000 reward.
Eight finalists were selected for the final three days of competition at a convention centre outside of Washington from a field of 245 local champions, ages 8 to 15, after regional tournaments.
A few of the finalists were defeated by brainteasers that included “kanin,” which is boiling rice in the Philippines, “murrina,” and Lillooet, a people group from modern-day British Columbia.
Many young participants astounded onlookers with their ability to spell some of the most challenging and uncommon terms in the English language with grace and precision. Since 1925, the Scripps media group has sponsored the event; the only breaks were three years during World War II and another in 2020 due to the Covid epidemic.
With participants hailing from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the US territories of Guam, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands, the majority of competitors were Americans. This year, there was also representation from Canada, the Bahamas, Germany, and Ghana.
Since 1999, Nalgonda in Telangana has produced a number of notable Indian-American champions and challengers. Bruhat’s father, Srinivas Soma, is from this region. Lala, a neuro-oncologist now, attended the bee this year for the first time in ten years, which brought inspiration and a hint of nostalgia to the occasion.
In addition to being a master speller, Bruhat is a multi-talented person with excellence in a variety of fields. LeBron James is his favourite basketball player, and he enjoys both playing and watching the sport. Playing ping-pong, badminton, and the snare drum in his middle school band are some of his other pastimes.
In retrospect, Bruhat disclosed that he spent six months practicing the spell-off on a daily basis. “Having put in so much work, I felt pretty confident that I had a chance to win,” he remarked. And I was genuinely hoping to win. I rehearsed the spell-off a lot because of this.
